controlled, tungsten tipped flailretexturing treatment; restore skid resistance & reduce crashes in any weather
Whilst still a prototype, this unique machine – and looking remarkably similar to the K190 bush hammering unit - is based on the well-known flail concept. ROT has been the subject of major technological design and development and is a considerable improvement on current flailing systems, the machine being able to deal with wheel-tracked or rutted surfaces. ROT, with more than 2000 flails, is designed specifically to restore skid resistance on any road and runway surface. The flails cut into the surface to remove polished particles or break through the existing bitumen film to expose fresh aggregate. The resulting shallow grooves substantially reduce the risk of wet-skid loss of control incidents and associated casualties.
Accurate control and because of the unique way the cutting drums are mounted means that it is possible to apply a consistent treatment to uneven surfaces over the full retextured width. Adjusting the drum rotation speed, the height of the cutting drums and the working speed ensures the ROT machine can be used on any natural aggregate surface (bituminous as well as cementitious) in order to restore micro texture and, where required, macro texture. These adjustments can also accommodate different surface bitumen conditions, aggregate sizes and the degree of accelerated weathering.
The ROT machine is now ready for final testing to fine-tune the system. This will determine the operational parameters to achieve the optimal result of micro and macro texture improvement on different road and runway surfaces.

OBJECTIVES:
- Improve surface friction, skid resistance and provide mechanical key for material overlays, by:
- Restoring micro texture - Restoring macro texture (on some surface types)
MARKETS:
- Roads - all clases and most material types - Runways - most material types including open textured friction course and asphaltic concrete - Industrial areas - Harbour areas - including block paving - Race-tracks
FEATURES:
- Restoration of micro texture (and macro texture on some surfaces) - Consistent treatment to uneven surfaces over the full retexturing width, also in the wheel tracks - Localised weak areas can be avoided - ROT can operate in any weather condition - Repeatable & cyclic - Potentially up to 90% reduction in carbon footprint compared with material based alternatives
TECHNICAL ASPECTS:
- Treatment width: adjustable from 125 to 2000 mm - Working speed: adjustable from 0 to 50 m/min - Traction: hydro-static - Steering: all wheel steering; both axles independently - Power: 300 kW
KEY BENEFITS:
- Helps meet Government's safety targets - Cost effective - Extends surface life - Involves NO materials - An any weather process - Controlled & consistent - Repeatable & cyclic - Causes minimum disruption - Energy efficient - low fuel useage & carbon emissions - Assures well maintained skid resistant surfaces
