MacroTex (MAT)
controlled, wet-shot retexturing treatment; restore skid resistance & reduce crashes in any weather

MAT

KLARUW SYSTEMS innovative MAT machine has been designed specifically to restore skid resistance to existing natural aggregate road and runway surfaces. Klaruw’s controlled retexturing substantially reduces the risk of wet-skid loss of control incidents and associated casualties.
Whilst still a prototype, this unique machine is based on the well known steel shot blasting principle but with a significant difference. It has been the subject of major technological design, development and secret testing on closed military bases over many years to ensure that the MAT machine works in wet weather conditions.

This concept had previously been considered a step too far in surface treatment expertise and is certainly a considerable improvement on current shot blasting or water-jetting techniques.

The MAT machine is now ready for final testing to fine-tune the system. This will determine the operational parameters to achieve the optimal result of macro and micro texture improvement on different road and runway surfaces.

The machine comprises two 6-axle tractor-trailer units, connected by an auto-docking telescopic arm whilst the treatment is being carried out. The first unit deploys the steel shot and process water to retexture the surface to restore micro and macro texture. Whilst the steel shot is recycled in the first unit, the second unit separates debris from the process water, which is then reused in the treatment. Recovered debris is dewatered and stored on board prior to removal at the end of the day’s operations.

Both machines are fully computer controlled; this ensures accurate management of the treatment intensity. It is even possible to locally increase the treatment in the wheel tracks to achieve consistency over the full retextured width.

This second unit can also be used as a stand-alone machine for high-pressure surface cleaning.

OBJECTIVES:

- Improve surface friction, skid resistance and provide mechanical key for material overlays, by:

- Restoring micro texture
- Restoring macro texture

- Remove surface bitumen from newly laid SMA
- Removal of heavy surface deposits / contamination
- Removal of fine dust

MARKETS:
- Roads - all clases and most material types
- Runways - most material types including open textured friction course and asphaltic concrete
- Industrial areas
- Harbour areas - including block paving
- Race-tracks

FEATURES:
- Restoration of macro texture and micro texture
- Localised weak areas can be avoided
- Repeatable & cyclic
- No hot-spot; MAT retexturing can be carried out full carriageway width without treatment overlap but with variable
treatment to achieve consistent results, also in the wheel tracks (usually between carriageway markings)
- Can be carried out in any weather conditions
- Effective cleaning; fine dust as well as larger particles are removed effectively
(important for FOD standards on runways)
- Environmentally friendly;
- Recycling of process water minimises the use of water
- No new materials involved, effectively recycling and extending the life of existing surfaces
- Potentially up to 90% reduction in carbon footprint compared with material based alternatives
- All debris is collected and dried before disposal

TECHNICAL ASPECTS:
- Treatment width: adjustable from 240 to 1900 mm
- Working speed: adjustable from 2 (heavy retexturing) to 100 m/min (light cleaning)
- Traction: hydro-static
- Length: 36 meters
- Train weight: 88 Tons (2 x 6 axle tractor-trailer units, each weighing 44 tons)
- Power: 1700 kW

KEY BENEFITS:
- Helps meet Government's safety targets
- Cost effective
- Extends surface life
- Involves NO materials
- An any weather process
- Controlled & consistent
- Repeatable & cyclic
- Causes minimum disruption
- Energy efficient - low fuel useage & carbon emissions
- Assures well maintained skid resistant surfaces
